Effects Of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are very serious illnesses that can cause dramatic and severe physical and emotional effects. Current statistics show an alarming rise in the number of people, both men and women who are currently suffering from these types of disorders. About 8 million people in the United States suffer from Bulimia or Anorexia, with 7 million of these individuals being female.
Statistics also show that eating disorders are the third most common serious chronic illness to affect adolescents. A recent study showed that 10 percent of individuals will die from physical and emotional effects of eating disorders within 10 years after onset. Additionally, a fifth of Anorexia sufferers will die prematurely due to complications associated with the eating disorder. Unfortunately, only about 10 percent of those who suffer from eating disorders seek treatment.
The Dangerous Effects Of Eating Disorders
The effects of eating disorders are numerous, affecting every part of the body. Without proper intake of nutrients, vitamin and mineral levels can drop, resulting in severe deficiencies. This can affect the heart causing abnormal heart rhythms. Blood pressure can also drop causing heart palpitations, fainting and dizziness. Blood sugar levels can become low, the body temperature can drop and the liver may not function properly. Muscle loss can occur as well as bone loss due to lack of protein and calcium. This can lead to risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
One of the most dangerous effects of eating disorders is the risk of heart failure due to the heart muscle deteriorating. This serious effect is the most common cause of death in individuals who suffer from anorexia. Self-induced vomiting also carries the risk of serious health problems. The effects of eating disorders are so serious that the death rates among sufferers are higher than any other mental illness. Approximately one out of every 20 anorexia sufferers commits suicide because of the serious effects of this disorder.
