Considering the lethality of these different disorders, this is a necessary step in the right direction towards recovering. Here is some general information regarding each one.

  • Anorexia Nervosa – displaying physical manifestations such as extreme thinning or weight loss and unhealthy hair appearance; exercising excessively and frequently; making excuses for not being hungry and eating or refusing to eat; and obsessive dieting despite having a normal weight range
  • Bulimia Nervosa – avoiding those social occasions where food and eating are prevalent; being concerned or obsessed with their weight; displaying numerous physical symptoms including such as bad breath, dental health problems, and the backs of their hands are cut are scratched due to purging activities; and making frequent trips to the bathroom after finishing a meal
  • Binge Eating Disorder – although it is a slightly different eating disorder, it is sometimes referred to as “compulsive overeating”; binges may continue for days at a time rather than fewer episodes throughout the week; the individual may eat normally in front of others and then binge in secrecy; the individual uses food to cope with uncomfortable or unpleasant emotions and feelings; and overeating episodes occur late at night when others in the house are gone or sleeping.

Additionally, what you want to be aware of is the fact that binge eaters are similar to anorexics and bulimics in that they are continually struggling with their weight and unhappy with their appearance.
