Eating Disorder Treatment Program

A word about eating disorders

The terminology “eating disorders” refers to specific conditions that are characterized by abnormal eating patterns that can involve either the excessive intake or insufficient intake of food. This behavior is detrimental to the person’s emotional, mental, and physical health and can be fatal if the individual does not get professional help through an eating disorder treatment program. In the US, the most common eating disorders are:

  • anorexia nervosa
  • binge eating disorder
  • bulimia nervosa

The common perception of these conditions is that they primarily occur among the late adolescent to young adult age group of Caucasian females in the western world. However, they are not exclusive to this age group and gender. Although eating disorders primarily do affect that age group and gender, men suffer with these disorders as well. For instance, in the US, women are 9 to 10 times more likely to suffer with eating disorders than men are.

Causes of eating disorders

Although the causes of eating disorders have not been strictly determined, there is evidence to support that they could be linked to other medical and psychological conditions. For instance, the results of one controlled 5-year study revealed that young females diagnosed with ADHD developed an eating disorder more often than female who did not have ADHD. Another school of thought claims that the development of more eating disorders in the US is a result from the pressure that society puts on individuals to look good and be thin.

Despite the fact that the causes of eating disorders is still unknown, it has been speculated that the causes could involve a combination biological, environmental, and psychological abnormalities. There is a quote in certain circles that states “genetics load the gun while the environment pulls the trigger”, meaning some individuals are born with a pre-disposition to an eating disorder while the environment and how they react to it brings on the onset.
