Eating Disorder Treatment Plan

Asking for help is the first step

Finding professional help for an eating disorder can be challenging and frightening. Once you gain the support of a family member, friend, fellow employee, minister or pastor, or even a school counselor, you are well on your way to a successful recovery. However, some people find comfort in discussing their circumstances with an eating disorder treatment specialist (i.e. eating disorder counselor, nutritionist, etc.). One way or the other, this is the first step that needs to be taken.

Finding a specialist

When you have approached an eating disorder specialist or other professional, your recovery is going to proceed much smoother. You want to find a professional who specializes in anorexia, binge eating, or bulimia depending on which disorder you are suffering with. During your search for a specialist, you want to focus on finding a program that addresses your personal needs. Additionally, you want that person to make you feel accepted, comfortable, and safe despite what you are going through.

Address any health problems you may have

Remember first and foremost that eating disorders are not only dangerous, they can be fatal. Your health may be in jeopardy even if the bingeing, fasting, or purging only happen occasionally. The bottom line is that you want to get a full medical evaluation to determine if you have any health problems resulting from your eating disorder as well as how severe the disorder has gotten. Nothing is ever as important as your personal well-being so if the problem has gotten serious enough, you may be hospitalized.

Design and develop a treatment plan that is long-term

Once you have gotten any health problems under control, you need to sit down with your physician or therapist and line out a long-term plan for a successful recovery from your eating disorder. This is the basic premise of any eating disorder treatment plan. Many people organize treatment teams so that every stage in the process is covered by an eating disorder specialist or medical professional. These teams typically include a family doctor, a nutritionist, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a social worker.

Now you can develop an eating disorder treatment plan that targets your personal needs. This plan may include the following:

  • eating disorder education
  • family therapy sessions
  • group and/or individual therapy sessions
  • in-patient treatment programs
  • medical monitoring
  • nutrition counseling

In any case, you want to make sure that the eating disorder treatment plan that you and your team devise includes every element necessary to ensure your personal success.
