Compulsive Eating Disorder Treatment

What are compulsive eating disorders?

These types of eating disorders are typically described as a food addiction or compulsive over-eating.  They are usually characterized as a relationship with food that would be categorized as either abnormal or obsessive/compulsive in nature.  Compulsive eating disorder treatment centers normally address and treat this condition in one of two ways, either as a food addiction or a behavioral disorder.  Therefore, they employ therapy modalities that specifically address one or the other.

What you have to remember is that the person who suffers from a disorder of this nature frequently binges and has no control over their eating.  They will oftentimes eat enough to make themselves extremely uncomfortable and are forced to quit.  Depression and guilt typically follows after the episode.  The key difference between compulsive eating disorders and condition such as anorexia and bulimia is that the compulsive overeater does not follow up with compensatory behavior like the anorexics and bulimics do.

The individual suffering with bulimia follows up their eating with defensive or self-induced vomiting whereas the compulsive overeater usually doesn’t fast, induce vomiting, or consumes laxatives like the other groups do.  Food is even consumed by the individual whether or not they are hungry.  The disorder is also characterized by patterns of spending excessive time periods that are devoted to fantasizing and thinking about eating by themselves.

The typical outcome of this type of eating disorder is that either obesity or a noticeable and sudden weight gain becomes apparent.  Once the disorder has progressed to this point, it is time for the individual to enter a compulsive eating disorder treatment for help.  The right treatment center will help the individual so that they recover successfully from the disorder and can return home to lead a normal life.  As with any other addiction or disorder, it is extremely easy for the person to relapse back into that behavior.

Treating the underlying cause can be difficult

There has been significant research conducted about eating disorders.  Unfortunately where the possible causes are concerned, it has been difficult to determine this.  What is known is that roughly 50% of all individuals who have undergone treatment have either had past experiences with depression or are currently suffering with it.  This makes treating eating disorders a difficult proposition at times and psychologists have had to dig deeper so that they can uncover the possible cause or causes.
