Bulimia Eating Disorder Treatment
Mental and physical impact of the disorder
The eating disorder bulimia nervosa not only affects the individual physically, it affects them emotionally and psychologically as well. The onset of the disorder usually begins with a misconception of personal our appearance and dissatisfaction with the way we look. It may be a genetic pre-disposition but typically, it stems from family influence and certain role models in our lives. Regardless, it creates a distorted image of our bodies and appearance, which is not true.
Initially, the individual begins dieting and when results are not seen quickly enough, they turn to more radical measures of losing weight such as defensive vomiting or purging, abuse of diuretics and laxatives, excessive exercising, and other drastic measures. Ironically, the individual may not be overweight at all and in some cases, they are seen to be underweight. However, when that individual sees himself or herself in the mirror, they see someone who needs to lose weight.
Side effects
There are a variety of side effects that can result once the disorder progresses to more severe stages. These include constipation, diarrhea, and other problems of the digestive tract. Additionally, vomit has a highly acidic content, which can eventually damage the esophagus and tooth damage. Individuals oftentimes develop sores inside the mouth and stomach. The stomach can also rupture in more severe cases.
The psychological symptoms of the disorder manifest themselves relatively early on, whereas the physical symptoms tend to take longer before they are noticeable. The person will usually try to keep the self-abuse a secret and not reveal that they have a problem, which makes the disorder even harder to identify. Once it has gotten to this point, the person should consider entering a bulimia eating disorder treatment program.
