12-Step Eating Disorder Treatment
What is a 12-Step program?
A 12-Step program contains guidelines and principles that outline how an individual can recover from addiction, compulsion, and a variety of other behavioral disorders. The program was originally published in the 1939 Alcoholics Anonymous book and was used by recovering alcoholics. Since that time, the program has evolved into other fields of addiction and behavior disorder treatment including eating disorders. Today, there are many facilities that offer a 12-Step eating disorder treatment program throughout the US.
According to the APA (American Psychological Association), the 12-Step process involves:
- admitting that you are powerless to control your addiction or compulsive behavior
- recognizing that only a higher power can be your source of strength
- with the assistance of an experienced member or “sponsor”, you examine the errors you have made in the past
- making amends for your past errors
- learning a new behavior code so that you can start living a new life
- helping those individuals who are suffering with the same conditions that you are
Today there are more than 200 of these fellowships or self-help organizations throughout the world with millions of members that employ the 12-Step recovery principles.
Notable 12-Step support groups
When it comes to 12-Step eating disorder treatment, the different support groups involved play a significant role in the individual’s recovery. Two of the more familiar organizations are EDA (Eating Disorders Anonymous) and OA (Overeaters Anonymous), but there are dozens of others to consider. EDA and OA are recognized as being two of the most effective support groups where anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are concerned.
