Binge Eating Disorder Recovery

What is a binge eating disorder?

The most common eating disorder in the US today is a binge eating disorder (BED for short). It affects about 3.5% of all females and 2% of all males and is a prevalent factor among 30% of the individuals who are seeking professional help for their eating disorder. Albert Stunkard, psychiatrist and researcher first describe binge eating disorders in the late 1950’s when he coined the term “Night Eating Syndrome” (NES) to describe this bingeing type of eating behavior.

BED was later coined to describe the disorder without the nighttime component of NES. Although you can find the disorder present among individuals who have maintained a normal weight factor, the disorder may eventually lead to obesity. Additionally, there may be genetic factors at play such as obesity or overeating on one side of your family or the other. These are aspects you should look for if you are concerned about a eating disorder and getting the proper binge eating disorder recovery.

Warning signs to look for

Anytime you are concerned about whether or not an eating disorder may be present, you will want to look for red flags that may be indicative of the disorder existing, just like you would look for warning signs of a substance dependency. Here are some of those warning signs that you need to be aware of:

  • eating alone during normal dining hours
  • eating large amounts of food even if you are not truly hungry
  • eating more quickly when you are bingeing than when you are eating normally
  • eating until you have gotten physically uncomfortable
  • eating unusually large quantities of food at one sitting
  • eating whenever you are bored or depressed
  • feelings of depression, disgust, or guilt after bingeing
  • not exercising any self-control over eating habits
  • rapid weight gain or the sudden onset of obesity

Any one of the above can be an indicator that an eating disorder is present and that it may be time to seek out professional medical help for your situation.
