Treatment for Bulimia Nervosa
Are you Bulimic?
Although it is difficult to admit the presence of an eating disorder and seek out a treatment for Bulimia Nervosa program, ask yourself these questions:
- Am I afraid that if I start to eat that I won’t be able to quit?
- Am I obsessed with the appearance of my body and how much I weigh?
- Do I eat until I become ill from overeating?
- Do I feel ashamed, depressed, and/or guilty when I am done eating?
- Is dieting and food controlling my life?
The more “yes” answers you responded with, the greater the likelihood that you have become bulimic or are suffering with an eating disorder. It may be time to consider entering an eating disorder treatment and recovery center.
You cannot avoid gaining weight by purging
What most bulimics do not understand is that purging will not help you avoid gaining weight. It is not effective at eliminating calories which is one of the reasons that bulimics oftentimes gain weight over time. Self-induced vomiting only eliminates 50% of the calories that you have consumed at best. In fact, it is usually much less. What you don’t realize is that calorie absorption begins immediately when you take that first bite of food.
Diuretics, enemas, and laxatives are another way that the bulimic attempts to eliminate calories but they are less effective than vomiting. You only eliminate 10% of these calories at best while diuretics do not eliminate any at all. Granted you may see that your weight has dropped slightly after taking a laxative but it is not because you have actually lost weight, you have only experienced water loss.
What is involved in the treatment for Bulimia Nervosa?
Bulimia Nervosa presents various medical and psychological complexities which most eating disorder treatment and recovery professionals feel can be reversed by utilizing a treatment approach that is multi-disciplinary in nature. The right treatment manager can assist with this since the best one is usually a psychiatrist that is trained in the medical and psychology fields. Additionally, the multi-disciplinary treatment approach that is the most effective is Cognitive-Behavior therapy.
This particular therapy is effective because of how it addresses Bulimia’s unhealthy eating behavior while at the same targeting the negative and unhealthy thoughts that triggers the bingeing/purging cycle. There are three phases present during the treatment for Bulimia Nervosa program when Cognitive-Behavior therapy is being used including:
- Breaking the bingeing/purging cycle
- Changing unhealthy behavior, patterns, and thoughts
- Solving any emotional issues that may be present
