Treating Bulimia
Development of the disorder
The onset of bulimia typically occurs around the age of 18 although cases of the disorder have been reported earlier on. It generally starts due to a misconception about eating and when the person has developed a distorted image of themselves. Despite the fact that they are not overweight, that is not what they see in the mirror. Ironically, in many cases, the person is slightly underweight. As the disorder progresses, it becomes increasingly more dangerous and fatalities are not uncommon.
Causes of the disorder
Roughly 90% of all bulimia cases involve women and if the individual doesn’t pursue getting professional help, the individual can die. Anywhere from 10% to 25% of all eating disorder cases can be fatal with up to 5% of those deaths resulting from suicide. Although the causes of bulimia have not been uncovered by medical research, the probable causes of the disorder may include:
- anxiety
- culture
- heredity
- lowered self esteem
- OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)
- unhealthy relationships with parents or other members of your family
Additionally, bulimia may cause the individual to start abusing alcohol and/or drugs, engage in self-mutilation, and become sexually promiscuous. The bottom line is that if you don’t get professional help and begin treating bulimia, it could eventually become fatal.
