Understanding bulimia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is one of the primary eating disorders that is characterized by alternating episodes of binging or overeating and purging or food. It is basically an emotional disorder but it can have very serious consequences including chronic illness and even death if the person does not receive professional bulimic treatment. Bulimia is 9 times more common in females than it is in males and is more prevalent among late adolescent to young adult Caucasian living in Western society.
However, it is not exclusive to that age group and gender or Western culture for that matter although that stems from the fact that Americans are obsessed with appearance, being thin, and losing excess weight. Family and parental pressure as well as peer pressure may also contribute to bulimia developing. The most widely used medication for bulimic treatment are anti-depressants known as SSRI’s.
