Bulimia Clinic
What is Bulimia?
Bulimia is one of three common eating disorders and is technically referred to as Bulimia Nervosa. The disorder is typically characterized by certain elements including excessive secretive eating (or bingeing) followed by inappropriate weight control techniques such as:
- abuse of diuretics and laxatives
- excessive exercise
- self-induced vomiting or purging
This is psychological disorder just like anorexia and one of those conditions that exceed dieting that has gotten out of control. Just like any substance dependency, bingeing and purging can easily become an obsession. The onset of the disorder usually stems from an individual being unsuccessful in their dieting attempts.
What are the causes of Bulimia?
Just like with anorexia, clinical research has not determined or uncovered what the exact causes of Bulimia are. It is a very complex disorder and research scientists are still studying the dynamics of it. Despite all the speculation, the following may be causes of the disorder. However, they have been known to play a significant role in the disorder’s onset:
- Biology – involves the chemicals, genes, and hormones of the brain
- Culture – women in the US are always being pressured to maintain a youthful appearance which puts added pressure and stress on them to be beautiful and socially acceptable
- Families – if your mother or sisters are experiencing or have experienced the disorder, this may increase the possibility that you will succumb to the disorder and necessitate entering a Bulimia clinic
- Life changes, stressful events, and traumas – like alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders in women oftentimes result from past traumatic experiences such as rape, spousal abuse, etc.
- Personality traits – a Bulimic person does not like who they are and hates their appearance, so they develop difficulties in controlling their eating behavior
The right Bulimia clinic can identify which one of these is present and can easily determine which Bulimia treatment center program ideally addresses your personal needs.
Basic signs and symptoms
The individual suffering with Bulimia Nervosa will always attempt to binge and purge in secrecy or when no one is around. They may be unable to effectively manage the amount of food that they have eaten as well. Other signs to watch for are the unexplained disappearance of the food that is consumed and no variations in the individual’s weight.
