Best Treatment for Bulimia
What is bulimia?
Bulimia or bulimia nervosa (technical name) is one of the three primary eating disorders along with anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder. It is equally as dangerous as the other two and can be fatal if the individual does not receive the best treatment for bulimia that is available to them. The condition is characterized by alternating periods of bingeing and purging. The bingeing cycle is indicative of the lack of control that the individual has over their eating while the purging is done to effect rapid weight loss.
Recognizing the warning signs of bulimia
All eating disorders exhibit similar symptoms and yet each one displays its own unique set that need to be recognized in order to accurately diagnose which disorder we are dealing with and how to properly treat it. In the case of bulimia, the World Health Organization or WHO has listed the following criteria as grounds for diagnosis:
- Although anorexics display a continual fear of getting obese, it is also one of the more common symptoms of bulimia
- Extreme purging methods include abusing diuretics and laxatives, consuming appetite suppressants, “defensive” or self-induced vomiting, and fasting
- Irresistible cravings for food and a persistent pre-occupation with eating
- Repeated episodes of consuming large amounts of food over a short period of time
If you notice any of these warning signs with you or a loved one, you should look for the best treatment for bulimia that is available.
Causes of bulimia
Unfortunately, the true causes of bulimia or any other eating disorder are unknown despite all the research and studies that have been conducted. So they are speculative at best. What is known is that individuals with bulimia usually suffer from depression and have low self esteem while in other cases, genetics may also play a factor. There are certain factors in the individual’s social environment that may come into play such as cultural pressure, life events, and stressful situations.
