What is Bulimia?

bulimia treatmentBulimia is one of a number of eating disorders that is characterized by restraining the proper intake of food over a non-specified period of time.  The technical name for the condition is Bulimia Nervosa.  This period is then usually followed by a binging period or over indulging in eating.  Typically, the individual succumbs to feelings of guilt and lower self esteem.  The average onset age of this eating condition is usually 18 years of age.

Make no mistake about it.  Bulimia is a very serious and dangerous illness that needs to be treated once it is detected.  Currently, the rate of death where people with eating disorders is concerned is anywhere from 10% to 25% depending on the severity of the condition and how long the person has been suffering with it.  Additionally, most of these deaths are typically result from suicides.

Signs and symptoms to be aware of

Just like with any other addiction or illness, there are always those “red flags” or warning signs that indicate a problem exists.  The same holds true for eating disorders and is why so many addiction treatment and recovery facilities now offer Bulimia treatment programs for those individuals who have the disorder.  Typically, there are cycles that will involve eating habits that are out of control and rapid in nature.

The following are some symptoms and warning signs to watch for if you feel you or a loved one is suffering with this problem:

  • chronic gastric reflux
  • infertility
  • constipation

  • oral trauma to the lips, mouth, and throat

Another issue in individuals suffering with Bulimia will oftentimes exercise to excess while neglecting all other types of physical activities.
