Bulimia Rehab Program
What causes the onset of Bulimia Nervosa?
As with Anorexia Nervosa and other eating disorders, the true causes of Bulimia Nervosa have not been uncovered through clinical research. The disorder is extremely complex and because of this researchers in the fields of medicine and psychology continue to investigate the dynamics of these disorders. There are certain risk factors that have been present when clinical professionals have been studying cases where an eating disorder is present:
- Body image is distorted and results in the individual feeling that they are unattractive
- There is a history of abuse and trauma, especially in cases involving women
- Low self esteem and a lack of self confidence is present in most cases
- Major changes involving a great deal of stress and transitioning have occurred in their lives
- The activities or professions they are engaged in are appearance-oriented
Overall, it is this distorted image of themselves that seems to be the primary trigger for the onset of the disorder. They may feel and look heavier but in reality, many Bulimics are slightly underweight when the disorder arises. They initially try dieting but when they see that their image isn’t changing, they take drastic steps to lose the excess weight that really isn’t there. This dieting eventually escalates into the vicious binging and purging cycle that is characteristic of Bulimia Nervosa.
What is involved in a Bulimia rehab program?
The ideal Bulimia rehab program involves a couple of aspects that make it more effective than other ones. First of all, each case of Bulimia treatment and recovery involves the supervision of what is known as a treatment manager. This can be one of three different professionals including:
- a physician
- a clinical psychologist
- a psychiatrist
The consensus of opinion that currently exists in the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery is that the ideal treatment manager is a psychiatrist who has been trained and is experienced in the areas of medicine and psychology.
Secondly, the most popular and commonly applied therapy is Cognitive-Behavior therapy, a multi-disciplinary approach that has been proven to be highly effective in reversing eating disorder behaviors, patterns, and thoughts. The Cognitive-Behavior therapy accomplishes two things. It directly addresses the unhealthy eating habits and behavior while at the same time targeting the negative and unrealistic thoughts that triggers the behavior.
