Treatment for Anorexia

Treatment for AnorexiaRegardless of the severity of it, any one who is suffering with some type of eating disorder should get professional help for the condition. Most of the eating disorder treatment and recovery centers throughout the US today offer treatment for Anorexia programs to help individuals overcome their eating disorder so they can live a normal life. In most cases, these programs involve a three-fold treatment and recovery venue that involves medical and psychological treatments as well as nutritional counseling.

There are three goals involved for the individual in most treatment for Anorexia programs. These include:

  • enabling the individual to regain control of their lives
  • gaining the trust of the individual by those who are trying to help them
  • teaching them emotional self-care

Additionally, there are two basic treatment formats. If the person’s condition has not become life-threatening, they will undergo a regimen of medical treatment, nutritional counseling, and psychological therapy in the form of group and individual counseling. You will be cared for by a team of licensed professionals that usually includes:

  1. Medical health professionals – doctors and nurses
  2. Mental health professionals – licensed counselors or psychologists
  3. Nutritional counseling – registered dieticians

If it is a teenager that is undergoing treatment for Anorexia, the involvement of the family members is a critical component of the rehab process. The family therapy that is involved helps them support the teenager emotionally and physically teaching them how to create normal eating patterns for their child. If there are siblings, they should be involved as well. When the condition has gotten to the point where it is life-threatening, the process may include emergency medical care right away just to save the individual’s life.

In this case, the treatment for Anorexia in many cases is going to include treating the individual for starvation along with nutritional rehabilitation. Being severely underweight can lead to life-threatening conditions including dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and starvation. Once the individual has become severely underweight, hospitalization will be the person’s only option and may be the difference between living and dying.

The bottom line is that Anorexia can be a lifelong illness. In some cases, the individual overcomes the disorder because the treatment for Anorexia program was effective and the individual responded well to the program. Some people will improve but will be fighting this eating disorder for the rest of their lives, relapsing and recovering intermittently. Finally, many people will continue fighting the disorder to no avail and eventually die from it.
